Crested Butte: The Resort...

The ski resort of Crested Butte is considered a hidden gem, retaining its small town charm and the adventurous soul that it has always held on to. With no traffic lights or chain stores and a genuine nature of community, the pristine surroundings immediately captivate any visitor to the ski resort of Crested Butte.  There are two distinct parts to Crested Butte – the original town and three miles up the valley the resort’s base area known as Mount Crested Butte. A sure sign that Crested Butte avoids the trappings of a large resort like others in Colorado is that transport between the two resorts is in an old school bus! While staying in Crested Butte, your time isn't just about a visit to ski an amazing mountain it’s about finding adventure in unadulterated settings surrounded by majestic peaks, panoramic valleys, and being connected to the culture and lifestyle that is Crested Butte.

Skiing in Crested Butte

The ski resort of Crested Butte is 8,885ft (2,708m) high up in the Elk Mountain range of Southwest Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Crested Butte is surrounded by over a million acres of National Forest, and within a few miles of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the newest National park in the United States. With a snowfall of nearly 298 inches of each season, Crested Butte is both idyllic and reliable.
Despite Crested Butte’s reputation as an extreme resort, beginners are well catered for. In fact, the resort of Crested Butte’s strength is the well-groomed easy terrain that’s simple and safe to access. Crested Butte employs ‘piste patrollers’ who enforce slow skiing areas. Add to this the less crowded nature of the resort, beginner skiers in Crested Butte are able to turn and stop as they desire.

The ski resort of Crested Butte also possesses excellent terrain suitable for the intermediate skier. For what is a modest sized ski area there is great variety and visitors feel as though they are constantly discovering new areas. However, it is Crested Butte’s advance and expert terrain that has built a strong reputation as a resort suited to competent skiers and riders in search of new and challenging experience.  This reputation means that Crested Butte plays host to the SAAB U.S. Extreme Free skiing Championships and the Subaru U.S. Extreme Boaderfest. Snowboarding in Crested Butte is also excellently provided for with 3 terrain parks including the DC Cannan Park and Keystone Rail Park. Furthermore, the compact layout means big traverses and flats are infrequent in the ski resort of Crested Butte.

Apres Ski in Crested Butte

The historic Victorian district in the ski resort of Crested Butte is home to a great choice of restaurants, shopping and nightlife, where every quaint wooden building looks as though it’s off the set of a western. Coming highly recommended is the Buffalo Grille and Saloon for a great selection of buffalo and beef steaks. Alternatively, The Secret Stash which is a 100 year old miner’s cabin with Japanese-style seating, serving Asian BBQ wings and gourmet burgers. Similarly, Ulley’s Cabin, named after one of Crested Butte’s local historical figures, offers an elegant sit-down lunch, après ski cocktails or even a sleigh ride dinner. Central to après ski in Crested Butte is Rafters, known for scheduling live music and even wet t-shirt contests. Visitors to Crested Butte can also experience the relaxing and perhaps healing powers of the resort’s two spas, Elevation and Wildflower.

Crested Butte Ski Resort Overview

Another of Colorado’s old mining villages, Crested Butte is in a state with several high profile ski resorts. Even so, the ski resort of Crested Butte is unique in character and promises a very different skiing experience to those of the larger resorts. Largely considered a newcomer to the ski scene, recent years have seen Crested Butte experience a period of development.  For example, over forty of Crested Butte’s original buildings have been restored to their Victorian glory, with others having been constructed in a sympathetic style. Nevertheless, Crested Butte still remains something of a backwater, making the resort a less commercialized and less busy alternative to Colorado’s busier resorts.

Mostly the mountain is suited to competent skiers and riders in search of new and challenging experiences.  Originally, Crested Butte hosted Scandinavian miners looking for a resort for jumping and downhill racing competitions.  This reputation has persisted and Crested Butte now plays host to the SAAB U.S. Extreme Free skiing Championships and the Subaru U.S. Extreme Boaderfest, attracting the fearless piste practitioner. In addition, owing to steep slopes, excellent snowfall and quieter slopes, Crested Butte has become something of snowboarder’s favourite. Even so, due to the recent development of Crested Butte, the resort is becoming increasingly beginner and intermediate friendly.
