Heavenly: The resort...

Heavenly by name, Heavenly by nature…!

Surrounded by the highest concentration of ski resorts in the US is Lake Tahoe. The state line dividing Nevada and California divides the lake and runs through one of the biggest ski resorts: Heavenly. The attraction of this area is that from one or two bases you can visit most resorts. Heavenly stands out as one of best areas both in terms of skiable terrains, and choice of good value accommodation.

The skiing and boarding in heavenly

The ski resort of Heavenly, is the highest and the largest of the resorts around Lake Tahoe. From the high-speed gondola in the middle of town you will find some amazing snow (its normal for here) and if that does not take your breath away, the views will. Skiing in Heavenly boasts long, beautifully and renowned tree-lined runs, some hair-raising steeps and powder to die for. more about the skiing and boarding in Heavenly >>

The apres ski in Heavenly

If you have the energy, after skiing in Heavenly, there is entertainment galore on offer. On the Nevada side of the ski resort of Heavenly expect something akin to Los Vegas - gambling and top entertainment on offer in the famous casinos. Food is fantastic value for money and if you have the strength, the nightlife just doesn’t stop. On the California side things are more sedate and calm! more about the apres ski in Heavenly >>

Heavenly Resort overview

The ski resort of Heavenly is situated on the border with California and Nevada, at the southern end of Lake Tahoe. There are fourteen different resorts to ski and board in the area around the lake. The scenery is stunning. Heavenly has a spectacular setting, with amazing views of Lake Tahoe and Nevada. Lake Tahoe is North America's largest alpine lake. Heavenly ski resort is an easy 3-hour drive from San Francisco and only just over an hour from Reno.

With 4,800 acres, the ski resort of Heavenly is one of North America's largest mountains. At over 10,000 feet, it is Tahoe's highest. The ski resort of Heavenly straddles two states, California and Nevada and has a skiable area of 4800 acres. The 3,500 foot vertical is unmatched on the West Coast and the second biggest in North America. The average annual snowfall is a formidable 360 inches. And just in case that's not enough for you, Heavenly have one of the largest snowmaking systems in North America covering 70% of the mountain.

It was indeed the view and the 'heavenly relief' of warm air rising, that led settlers to give the area the name it still uses today. Skiing in Heavenly is exactly that, heavenly. Snow is another reason Heavenly is famous, with an average snowfall of 30 feet. Snow has been known to fall on the high mountains where Heavenly sits during every month of the year. This means that Heavenly is amongst the first resorts in North America to open each season.

The original skiers were here a long time ago - the most famous was called Snowshoe Thompson who came through this area carrying the mail on ski's in the mid nineteenth century. Heavenly is now owned by Vail Resorts, who have made many improvements both on the mountain and around the South Lake Tahoe area. One of the biggest improvements for the ski area is the new Village at Heavenly. The village has cinemas, an ice skating rink and a multitude of shops, restaurants and bars.

Skiing in Heavenly really does offer something for everyone. With the Heavenly Gondola as its centrepiece. The Gondola, opened in 2000, neatly connects the new Village at Heavenly to the mountain, whizzing skiers, riders and sightseers alike to an observation deck before finishing the 12-minute journey that ascends nearly 3,000 feet above the sparkling waters of Lake Tahoe. From the observation decks are 360° views of Lake Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness and Carson Valley.
