Pyha and Ruka - The Resort... |
 |
Ruka sits just below the Arctic Circle and is in an incredibly beautiful and less populated region of Finland. It is often referred to as the Gateway to Lapland. It is a compact resort but has a lively feel with a variety of bars and restaurants and a huge range of evening winter activities.
Pyha is about 2 hours away from Ruka and is a more relaxed and sedate resort with a limited nightlife spread across 2 main bars. It is perfect for couples wanting a calm and relaxing holiday who can enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as the variety of activities on offer.
The season is one of the longest in Finland, going from October to May, although like all Finnish resorts the best time to travel is in spring between March to May due to the longer days and warmer temperatures.

The skiing and boarding in Pyha and Ruka |
 |
Both Ruka and Pyha are typical of Finnish resorts in that they offer beautifully groomed pistes that are perfect for beginners and early intermediates. Where Pyha stands out is that it can offer the best off-piste skiing in Finland and generally attracts more outgoing and adventures skiers and boarders. The cold temperatures ensure the snow is always in good condition and perfect for downhill skiing.
Across all Finnish resorts, it is not the skiing that takes precedence; it is the alternative winter activities. Ruka and Pyha are able to offer hundreds of kilometres of both Cross Country skiing and snowmobile tracks, a portion of which are illuminated for night tours. Reindeer and husky tours are also available in Pyha but in Ruka safaris to both the Russian border and the Arctic Circle as well as ice fishing, ice karting and snowshoeing are available. There is no doubt that you’ll have more activities to try than you have days in your holiday!

The Après ski in Pyha and Ruka |
 |
The Apres ski scene at these two neighbouring resorts is very different. Ruka is more lively with a good selection of bars and restaurants with a few staying open to the early hours. Pyha is more relaxed, with a calm and welcoming atmosphere and just 2 main bars. Pyha also offers a spa and fitness facility to help unwind in the evenings too. Both resorts however have an excellent variety of winter activities which include ice karting, snowmobile tours and reindeer safaris.
