Squaw Valley: The resort... |
 |
Spectacular lake views and fantastic skiing
Surrounded by the highest concentration of ski resorts in the US is Lake Tahoe. The attraction of this area is that from one or two bases you can visit most resorts. Squaw Valley stands out as one of the best areas next to Heavenly both in terms of skiable terrain, and choice of good value accommodation.

The skiing and boarding in Squaw Valley |
 |
Squaw Valley is the second largest resort in Lake Tahoe, and is situated on the North Shore. It boasts two powerful lifts leaving from the village; a jumbo gondola and a big cable car. From the top of the lifts less advanced skiers can ski in a gentle area of beginner slopes, while others looking for more difficult terrain can follow onto ski three of the biggest peaks in the area. You will be spoilt for choice and enjoy massive quantities of snow in wooded bowls and particularly empty slopes.

The apres ski in Squaw Valley |
 |
Compared to the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe where the Las Vegas style casinos are found, the California side tends to have a calmer atmosphere. If you are looking for a quieter, village orientated option to your apres ski, then Skiing in Squaw Valley is the place for you! more about the apres ski in Squaw Valley >>

Squaw Valley Resort overview |
 |
The Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley, California, is one of the largest ski areas in the United States, and was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. It is the second-largest ski area at Lake Tahoe, (after Heavenly), boasting highly-advanced chairlifts as well as the only Funitel in the United States (A Funitel is a type of high speed aerial lift used to transport skiers). Because of the resort's popularity, the entire community of Olympic Valley is commonly referred to as 'Squaw Valley.'
Squaw Valley USA is located at the end of a stunning alpine valley high in the Sierra's and has a base elevation of 6300 feet. It is a winter playground for all ages. Skiing in Squaw Valley offers over 4000 acres of terrain and often receives 40 feet of snow.
Squaw Valley is a mecca for 'steep skiing'. Legendary cliff areas such as The Palisades or The Fingers have featured in many ski films and attract skiers from all over the world. Since opening in 1949 Squaw Valley has made it to the A-list of North American Big Mountain Skiing mecca's such as Whistler, Jackson Hole and Crested Butte.
Skiing in Squaw Valley is legendary for some of the steepest terrain and deepest snowfall in North America. The endless snowfall, with an average of 450 inches each year, classic California sunshine and diverse terrain make skiing in Squaw Valley the perfect winter ski choice!
The European-style Village at the base of the mountain offers dining and shopping year round. Gold Coast, accessed via the Funitel, features two levels of restaurants, decks and bars. At the top of the cable car run, High Camp is home to the Olympic Ice Pavilion and Olympic Museum, as well as more restaurants. Squaw Valley's resort village lies tucked beneath towering mountain peaks that cradle a vast coverage of ski terrain. The village is stylistically Alpine, with winding walkways, rustic cafés, vibrant restaurants and bars, enticing shops and bohemian art galleries combined to create a stylish yet laid-back ambience.
Located at the top of Squaw Valley's aerial Cable Car, (one of the first and largest ski resort cable cars in North America) is High Camp. Opened in 1991, this revolutionary facility is a year-round paradise complete with a mountaintop Olympic sized Ice Skating Pavilion, Swimming Lagoon & Spa, Olympic Museum, restaurants and snowtubing. It is such a remarkable amenity that other ski resorts across the country have begun to emulate it.
